Agios Efstratios (Ai Stratis) is an island, located in the northeast Aegean Sea, 18 miles southwest of Lemnos. Its land covers about 44 km² and has 210 permanent residents. Soon it will become the first island to cover 100% of its energy needs from wind and photovoltaic parks.
It will not only be the first island powered 100% by Renewable Energy, but also the first non-interconnected one (e.g. not connected to the mainland grid by cable). The project has already been launched and will be fully implemented within a two and a half (2.5) years period.
Two wind turbines together with a photovoltaic park will be used for energy production while electric and hydrogen-powered vehicles will be used for eco-friendly transportation.
Ai Stratis will thus serve as an open workshop that would generate new knowledge - a workshop for a more environmentally-friendly society.
